Part-Time Health and Safety Trainer
 
The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure that all workers are treated with respect and dignity, earn a fair wage, and return home to their families alive and well.  We educate and mobilize workers, unions, and community activists to advocate for and promote a healthy and safe workplace.
 
The New England Consortium (TNEC) is the region's model Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Worker Health and Safety training organization.  Since 1987, TNEC has provided dynamic hands-on, participatory health and safety training.  TNEC is one of 20 programs administered by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Worker Education Program.  TNEC is based in the School of Health and Environment at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.  Five of New England’s coalitions for occupational safety and health (COSH groups) and Civil Service Employees Association Local 1000 (CSEA) of New York are partnering members of TNEC, including MassCOSH. 
 
Description:

MassCOSH seeks a part-time trainer to develop and deliver health and safety training through our partnership with TNEC.  Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in: worker health & safety, safety processes covered by OSHA 1910.120 hazardous waste and emergency response (HAZWOPER) regulations, work environment hazards and adult participatory/popular education. Quick learning-curve necessary.
 
The Health & Safety Trainer helps to lead MassCOSH in meeting its goals for providing worker-oriented training, building the regional health and safety movement, and developing working relationships with labor, environmental organizations, government, and business.
 
Primary responsibilities include:
 

  • Prepare for, organize and conduct hands-on, participatory health and safety training educational sessions that introduce workers to resources and rights they can use to identify, prevent and address health and safety concerns.
  • Working as part of a multi-trainer team in collaboration with the New England Consortium, offer 43 training days of OSHA 10-hour Construction, confined space, HAZWOPER and other courses, using a popular education approach.
  • Lead safety training modules, hands on demonstrations, verification and testing of safe and proper use of equipment, monitoring the effectiveness of the training
  • Develop proficiency in the understanding, use of and maintenance of equipment used in training courses as well as equipment, devices and supplies used in the field of environmental services, hazardous materials management, clean-up and emergency response.
  • Travel to courses, both in and out of state, including overnight and multi-day sessions, meetings, conferences, seminars, or other meetings 

Additional responsibilities will include:
 

  • Achieve and maintain appropriate professional credentials and certifications
  • Participate in course & trainer evaluation
  • Participate in curriculum development and revision for TNEC courses. This includes course materials such as manuals, computer based training, audio visual, and other training aids, and instructors’ guides 

Qualifications:
 

  • Excellent facilitation, written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience providing training to workers and adult learners, using popular education/interactive approaches
  • Experience in and strong commitment to workers rights and unions
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Must demonstrate leadership quality and be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with environmental or health & safety organizations a plus

Credentials
 
Must possess a valid driver license and have a means of transportation to various training locations. 

A BS/BA degree in a related field and/or five years practical and training experience
Qualifications include experience in one or more of the following: public health, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste cleanup, and/or worker health education
Competence with spoken English required.  Strong writing/editing skills and computer competence required 
Salary and Work Schedule:
 
This position is a part-time, one-year contract for up to 1,056 hours (or 132 8-hour days).  Due to the nature of the TNEC training schedule, applicants must have a flexible schedule.  Some weeks training maybe be 1-2 days, others may be 5 days.  TNEC is located in Lowell, MA and that is where many trainings and all trainer meetings take place.  However, trainings can also be located at a variety of locations throughout New England. Trainers are reimbursed for all travel costs.
 
The Health and Safety Trainer will be supervised by the Executive Director through weekly phone call check-ins and occasional in-person meetings as needed.    
 
The salary is $25.04 per hour with an estimated $$26,442.24 for the one-year contract.
